NYC WORKOUT CRAWL - All in with Angie

Happy happy hump day!!! I hope you are having a great week! This has been a busy couple of days with the Florida-Vanderbilt football game, besties in town and Sophie getting hurt at school yesterday. I am pooped to say the least. Anyway, I am so excited for y’all to read about my “Workout Crawl” weekend in NYC! This was such a fun post to write because I was able to re-live one of my all-time favorite weekends!

A lot of people asked why on earth we did a weekend trip to NYC with the sole purpose to JUST workout. And by “just workout” I mean 9 workout classes in less than 48 hours. The answer is… for FUN! All of the girls on this trip are SO passionate about health and fitness and NYC is home to some of the greatest fitness boutiques in the world. It was the perfect location for a trip like this! For the past four years, this has been an annual tradition for some of the girls in the group, and I was excited to be able to join in on the fun! If you love fitness and challenging yourself, I highly recommend planning a weekend getaway like this. In this blog post, I will do a short breakdown of what a fitness weekend like this entails. Also, if you’re ever looking for a fun workout class to take while in NYC… I’ve got some great recommendations for you! :)

DAY 1: Friday, Sept. 28

12:10PM - Bounce Queen- The Bari Studio

23 Leonard Street NYC, NY 10013

Bounce Queen was our first class of the weekend and it was SO MUCH FUN! It was a completely different workout than what I am used to, but in the best possible way! For starters, the entire class is spent bouncing on a fitness trampoline. Being the extremely uncoordinated individual that I am, this class was filled with laughter. Even though we were having the best time, it was still a tough workout, but in a completely different way. You will most definitely break a sweat in this high-cardio, fast paced class and get some major toning with all the strength you use to keep your balance on the trampoline. It was such a fun atmosphere and I loved our instructor!

2:00PM- Switch Playground- 12th Street location

Ever been to a class with a DJ? Well at Switch Playground you can do just that! In this class you are partnered up with someone for a HIIT based workout. You complete 20 stations, each 2 minutes long. The stations range from a treadmill, to exercises with weights, to plyometric exercises to the stairs! The lighting makes you feel as if you are in a club and you can feel the high energy from everyone in the class and your instructors. You will never do the same workout twice and you most certainly will break a sweat!  Most importantly the class is hard but FUN!

4:30- Y7 - Bryant Park

54 W 39TH ST. 2ND FLOOR | NEW YORK, NY 10018

I am going to be honest, I am not a huge fan of Yoga. I just can’t get into it and I am always counting down the seconds until the class is over. Y7 was a completely different experience. The class has a completely different vibe… the room is completely dark, with the only light coming from candles that have been placed throughout the room. You go through yoga sequences taught by the instructor, but also have durations during songs where you can do the entire sequences yourself. If that’s not for your, you can take this time to stretch and work on your own poses. The biggest game changer is the music. Unlike other yoga classes, this particular one included loud, upbeat music. It was a nice change! Of course I like the yoga class where they incorporate my favorite type of music…rap music ☺️

6:00PM - NEO U Fitness- BOOTCAMP / HIIT

420 5th Avenue New York, NY 10018

Neo was our last class on Friday and I was so exhausted that I may or may not have been counting down the seconds until it was over. It was a strength and HIIT based workout broken down into timed increments. They put the workouts on the wall so you knew what was coming next and how many rounds you had left to do. There were a lot of tabata exercises and free weight based exercises. Their whole facility was so nice and ridiculously HUGE. They also offer live streaming of their workouts which is a great thing to have!

Solace was one of my top favorite workouts and the hardest one we did while in NYC. It is a crossfit gym but the class we did “Body” was a workout based on the core principles of CrossFit, HIIT and strength and conditioning - so not an actual crossfit class. You do the entire class with a partner and are part of a bigger group. The class we did was three stations and we would spend an allotted time at each station doing different workouts ranging from pull ups to wall ball squats. We also got some cardio in as well on the rower and bikes. It reminded me somewhat of my workouts back in Nashville at Shed.

Now was this a fun class! And also a hard one but in a completely different way. AKT’s workout is a combo of toning, circuit and danced based workouts. You are moving the ENTIRE time and whew, those movements will get to you! The class is high energy and faced paced. The class we took involved resistance bands, light weights and a jump box.  I would love for this gym to come to Nashville. ☺️ They also have on demand workouts!

11:15AM Flight @ RISE WEWORK

Flight was another fun class. It reminded me a lot of Barry’s bootcamp except with the addition of rowers. The facility is so nice and they even have a spa connected to it! There was a treadmill station, rower station and floor station for free weights. The first half of the class was spent on the treadmills and the second half was split up between the rowing and the floor workout.

1:30-2:15 The Class By Taryn Toomey

Everyone who had taken The Class before was so excited to go back! It is definitely an experience like no other. The class that not only engages your body but your mind! With lots of repetitive small movements, calisthenics and plyometrics you will get your cardio in while also working on strengthening and toning. The instructor will challenge you to push through all discomfort and leave any mental stress or baggage behind. You will leave the class with your heart opened and feeling enlightened!

Dancebody Nomad

Dance body was SO FUN! Let’s be honest. I cannot dance. I am not coordinated what so ever but still enjoyed this class. The class involves dance inspired toning and cardio moves that will keep your heart-rate up, make you break a sweat and the class flies by! The playlist was so fun and the instructor had the best energy! A great class to end the crawl with.

This was such a fun weekend. I actually was more sore after I ran my half marathon than after I completed this weekend. I think it is because all of the workouts were so different and I knew to pace myself with each workout. Also classes like Y7 and The Class gave some good stretching in the workouts.

My favorite workout of the trip was Solace just because it was right up my ally and the kind of HIIT workout I love to do. Second would be AKT or Switch. Switch is another class that is similar to what I do here in Nashville and AKT was just so different and fun that I loved it!

If you ever decide to do a workout crawl weekend here are a couple of tips:

  1. Start the day with the hardest workouts and have them get easier as the day goes on. Yoga is a great class to end with.

  2. Pack LOTS of snacks. I snacked on dried fruit and had protein bars and shakes snacks in between classes. The first day I had snacks only and was dying by the end of the day because all I wanted was a meal. The second day I had a hearty lunch and it made such a difference! Planning out workouts that don’t have a lot of running and movements that will upset your stomach after lunch is smart too!

  3. Bring a backpack to carry all your stuff! In mine each day I packed a phone charger, snacks, deodorant, dry shampoo, face wash, pre workout and all the additional workout clothes I was going to wear.

  4. Gallon ziplock bags so you can change workout clothes after each class and put your sweaty clothes in the bag.

This really was a trip I will remember forever. As you can imagine, working out 4 or 5 times in a day gets your endorphins to an all-time high so it was an incredibly stress-free, fun weekend. When we finished our last workout, I felt incredibly proud and I would do it all over again!! If you ever decide to do a trip like this I would love to hear all about it!!!
